SEO Step By Step: Part 3 - Business Listings

Tonight I went through the tedious step of submitting my business website to local business directories, namely:

  1. Google Places
  2. Bing Business Portal
  3. Yahoo Local Business
  4. DMOZ
  5. Herald Tribune - Local.com
  6. ChooseSarasota.com
  7. HotFrog

Many of these take a while to appear as there is an authentication process which can take several weeks. It's good to get this done as soon as possible. To make this process easier, I recommend writing out a few paragraphs about your business in objective terms that provide a useful description of what you offer and save it in a plain-text file along with your company name, address, email, website and contact phone number. You will need this information handy as you go through the registration process and it's easier to write it once, then copy-paste rather than write it out again each time.

On another front, at this point in time our site is now indexed on Google (see below).

SSWD Indexing Results

You can't see all 18 results, but you'll notice that each page has its own unique title and a meaningful description. I had mentioned earlier that you want to wait to submit your site to search engine indexes until you have entered this information, and this shows why it is important to do that first. If my site had been indexed before entering the proper meta information the indexing results would have been unpredictable.
